You need to get in front of the camera
I know many photographers don’t enjoy being in front of the camera, but I think there is value in switching it up and getting out from behind the camera. I have been taking self-portraits for three years now and here's why I think it's important that you try it out as a photographer.
It encourages creativity
Creativity burnout is real. It's easy to get stuck in the routine of what we are doing, and it can be hard to think of new ideas for our sessions and business. For me, this is a great way to try something fun and experiment with creative ideas that I wouldn’t always be able to do in a client session. If I have a spontaneous idea, I don’t always have to wait until someone’s free, I can just do it myself. After I do a self-portrait session, I’ve found I have way more creative ideas to bring into my client sessions or elevate my photography business.
It puts you in your client's shoes
We’re always the ones behind the camera and sometimes a flip of perspective gives me ideas of how to better serve my clients and make them feel more comfortable. It reminds me what it feels like to be in front of the camera so I can better anticipate the needs of my clients and proactively address them. All of which goes to help in creating a better client experience so that you can build those long-term client relationships.
It's a good challenge
Self-portraits aren’t always easy. You can’t see what you look like or if you’re in frame. It takes a LOT more trial and error to get the settings and focus right, but I love the challenge of it and it’s so exciting when you nail the shot. The experience from these shoots then translates into greater confidence when working with clients in various shooting conditions.
It's a great confidence boost
As photographers, we are all about making our clients feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera and delivering photos that they love of themselves. I believe it is very empowering to take the time to do that for ourselves as well. Self-portraits have been a great way for me to become more confident in front of the camera and in my everyday life.
If you’ve never done self-portraits, I encourage you to give it a try and see how they can impact your photography business!
